Neurological Conditions
I’ve always worked under the premise that Yoga/ Movement is for everyone no matter their physical abilities, connecting the brain/body connection is the key to maintaining the highest quality of life for people living with neurological diseases. Most of my students are concerned with one thing - I want to keep walking - whether with a stick or crutches - but staying out of a wheelchair is a big theme in my work. Other issues such as pelvic floor, energy levels, sleep and anxiety arise too. My goal is to empower students with exercises that are doable, stabilising and strengthening for whatever muscles are struggling to keep up. I work to design them a great exercise and breathing regime that helps them to manage their condition. I use many tools including yoga, pilates, Feldenkrais and the most important movement for walking …..
Arthritis/ hip dysplasia
Its a broad heading and again students are always individual. I have some students who “ flare” from time to time, some who tire easily, some with Rheumatoid, some with Osteo and some with Psoriatic. Again working in joints you must go easy not to end range and work to moisten and cool the joint from the inside. I have had great success in this area. Functional movement is key.
Back pain
Again its very individual and often requires some bodywork with a physio/osteopath too. Having a great body worker and a great exercise regime will keep your back supple and prevent inflammation. Learning about posture is key and I spend quite some time working with people in how to improve standing/ driving and sitting to understand their own patterns.
